Nigel never says his name is Nigel at Starbucks. American's just don't know the name Nigel so there's always more detail required and when he's desperate for his really bad cawffee - he's not going to go through any extra shenanigans. He's chosen Sam because it's the shortest, easiest name and therefore no one ever looks at him funny or asks how to spell it. The funny thing is that Nigel knows Sam Neil - the one that was in the first Jurassic Park and as it happens Sam was originally also called Nigel but he had to change it when he realised, he'd get no mates in Hollywood with that handle.
